Digvijay Singh’s Comments About Death of Hemant Karkare Are Pro-Pakistan:

The BJP on Sunday went on an all-out attack against Digvijay Singh on his “abs­urd” comments related to the death of Hemant Karkare as Maharashtra’s ATS chief during the 26/11 strike, and dem­anded that he apologise to the nation. The Congress should sack the leader, the BJP added, but the controversial general secretary further upped his ante against the Sangh Parivar.

BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said the Congress had not done enough by just distancing from Singh’s comment on Saturday that Karkare, who was investigating the 2006 Malegaon blasts, had feared for his safety from right-wing extremists. “The Congress has to apologise to the nation and force its general secretary to resign. Else, it would mean that they were instigating Singh to make remarks that trigger communal passions, and later condemn it too to escape blame.” BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu said in Hyderabad that such “stupid and idiotic” comme­nts would only please Pakistan. VHP general secretary Praveen Togadia called Singh an “agent of Pakistan”.

Singh maintained that his statements were factually correct. Also, “I never questioned the involvement of Pakistani elements in 26/11. But, why are the BJP leaders questioning Karkare’s integrity?” He also wanted to know why a BJP delegation met PM Manmohan Singh and vouc­hed for the innocence of Pra­gya Singh and other accused in the Malegaon blasts. “Why did (ex-BJP president) Raj­nath Singh visit Pragya in jail? Why are they supporting Indresh Kumar? They should answer this first.” The Congress continued to keep away from the issue. “It is a conversation between two individuals,” said party’s Janardan Dwivedi.
