10 billion

Apple’s app store has been a huge success and a trend setter for the industry. It was just a few months back when a total of 5 billion apps were downloaded from the app store and today they hit the 10 billion mark. This makes an average of almost 1 billion downloads each month. Isn’t it a hell lot of software spread? That’s only for a single operating system that spans on only three devices – iPhone, iPad and the iPod touch.

Some people have concerns over this figure like the counter could be an auto-increment one without a real link with the app store downloads. Despite the controversies, I’d have to admire that Apple has done a great job. It has set such a trend that you’ll find app stores everywhere these days. From smartphone manufacturers, mobile OS developers and carriers to eReaders, web browsers and desktop OS developers everybody has got an app store. This ubiquitous way of software distribution has really done wonders. From making people millionaires to encouraging the development of stunning pieces of software, great things have been happening and might not stop happening anytime soon.

Apple had promised a $10,000 iTunes gift card for the customer who’d download the 10 billionth app. The name of the winner isn’t yet announced but I’m really excited about that. Could that lucky guy be me? Well, may be a lucky thegadgets.net reader?
