Richard Holbrooke : Veteran US diplomat Richard Holbrooke Passed Away on December 13, 2010. Veteran US diplomat Richard Holbrooke, 69 years old, the US special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, has died after undergoing surgery after suffering a torn aorta. Richard Charles Albert Holbrooke was a top-ranking American diplomat, magazine editor, author, professor, Peace Corps official, and investment banker.
Richard Holbrooke was the only person to have held the position of Assistant Secretary of State for two different regions of the world (Asia from 1977 to 1981 and Europe from 1994 to 1996). Later, Richard Holbrooke was the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan under the Obama administration.
President Barack Obama had told members of Holbrooke’s family at a diplomatic holiday reception at the State Department just hours earlier: “America is more secure and the world is a safer place because of the work of Ambassador Richard Holbrooke.
Earlier, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in Canada that Holbrooke, who brokered the Dayton Accords that ended the Bosnian war, remained in stable but “very critical condition.” After a career spanning nearly 50 years at the pinnacle of US diplomacy, Holbrooke fell ill on Friday, during a meeting at the State Department.
