Today, India is observing 148th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda whose works have inspired many people around the world for service to humanity.

Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902) has been a spiritual genius and great son of India who achieved much in his short span of life. Born in the Datta family of Kolkata, he had a quest to know the truth about God and became a disciple of Shri Ramakrishna to be transformed into a sage with authority to teach Vedanta philosophy.

After Shri Ramakrishna’s death, Vivekananda took sanyasa and toured India as a wandering monk. Later, with an opportunity to represent Hinduism at Chicago’s Parliament of Religions in 1893, Vivekananda got instant celebrity status in America. He toured America and Europe to spread his spiritual teachings.

After spreading the Vedanta philosophy and tenets of Hinduism in the west for three years, he returned to India and founded the Ramakrishna Math and Mission.

He toured India once again to awaken people to a new national consciousness. He went the west for a short time once again. Shortly after his foreign tour, he died on July 4, 1902.

His lectures and writings have been compiled into nine volumes by the Ramakrishna Mission.
