India’s ambassador Meera Shankar Patted Down At US Jackson Airport, Evers International Airport in Mississippi by an American security agent. The incident took place on December 4 where Meera Shankar was about to board a flight to Baltimore after attending the Mississippi State University’s programme. Those who witnessed the ambassador’s screening said officers told her that Meera Shankar was singled out because of the way she was dressed. Meera Shankar was wearing a saree.
Meera Shankar was taken to a VIP waiting room despite being told she was an ambassador. She was later pulled from a security line and patted down by a female Transportation Security Administration agent. Shankar presented her diplomatic papers to officers and was escorted by a Mississippi Development Authority representative.
Meera Shankar (9 October 1950) is India’s Ambassador (2009-) to the United States of America and India’s second female ambassador to the United States of America, Vijayalakshmi Nehru Pundit was the first ambassador to United States of America. Shankar, an Indian Foreign Service officer of the 1973 batch was posted in Washington from 1991 to 1995. She succeeds Ambassador Ronen Sen. She studied at the reputed St.Mary’s Convent in Nainital.
However, a Transportation Security Administration spokesman said diplomats are not exempt from the searches and that Shankar “was screened in accordance with TSA’s security policies and procedures.” Officials at the Indian embassy in Washington declined to discuss what happened.
